Is Ongoing Training Required for Active Security Guards?

Security guards need to maintain their skills, learn new information as laws change, and ensure they have the knowledge necessary to do their jobs correctly. This means that, in addition to initial training requirements which must be completed when first becoming a security professional, guards are also required to undergo periodic guard card refresher training. When Guard Card Refresher Training is Required Under California law, guard card refresher training is required in order for security guards to maintain an active registration with the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). Business and Professions Code Sections 7583.6 and 7583.7 set forth the mandates for ongoing training for active registered security guards to ensure guards have the skills and knowledge necessary to work safely and effectively. The refresher training for security personnel is required once per year. Active security guards must take at least eight hours of educational training each year in order to remain registered with BSIS as a qualified security guard.
