How Long is a Security Guard Card Valid For?

If you earn a California guard card and become a registered security guard, you have the qualifications and credentials that you need to work in the security field. It is important to remember, however, that your security guard registration is not just going to be automatically valid forever. If you want to build a career as a security guard and work in this profession over the long-term, you need to understand the ongoing continuing education and registration requirements. You cannot afford to make a mistake or let your registration lapse, as this could end up affecting your finances and your ability to do your work. How Long is a California Guard Card Good For? For licensed security guards in California, your security guard registration is valid for two years. However, you need to complete an annual eight hour refresher course in order to continue to maintain your registration. At the end of the two years, you have to file for renewal. Your registration will remain active until the date that is specified on your card. However, you do not want to wait until the stated expiration date.  You have a 60-day grace period in which to file for renewal if you have waited until the expiration of your current card. However, you have to pay penalty fees if you wait. If you do not apply for renewal within the grace period and more than 60 days have passed, you will no longer simply be able to renew your registration. Instead, you have to apply for registration as a new applicant and start all over earning your California guard card. Don’t let this happen to you. Get your refresher training done and apply early so you can protect your continued ability to work.
