The amount of time it takes to become a security guard varies depending upon the type of certification that you are interested in. For example, you can get training to register with the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) and become eligible for many security positions. You can also register as a Proprietary Private Security Officer if you wish to do so, but will need to get additional private security officer training. How Long Does it Take to Become a Security Guard?  The basic requirements to register with BSIS begin with obtaining a guard card. To obtain this card, you must take an eight hour class.  You can find guard card courses online. Within 30 days of obtaining your guard card or employment as a guard, you have to do another 16 hours of training.  You then have a total of six months from the time you started work or got your guard card to complete an additional 16 hours of coursework. This means by the time six months is up from when you first got your guard card, you should have completed 40 hours of coursework.  You will also need to complete an additional eight hours of refresher training annually to maintain status as a registered security guard with BSIS. Additional training is required to become a Proprietary Private Security Officer, so you will need to devote more time to obtaining PSO registration. Private security officer training includes a 16 hour course.
