Do You Have the Right Temperament to Be a Security Guard?

California guard training can help you to learn many of the essential skills you will need to be a successful security guard. A total of 40 hours of training are required for new guards, including an eight hour guard card course as well as an additional 32 hours of training. The 32 hours of training must be completed within the first six months of work as a guard or after obtaining a guard card, with 16 of those hours completed within 30 days of beginning work. While this training can teach you much of what you need to know, you should also make sure you have some of the soft skills which are essential to being a successful security guard.  Not everyone has the temperament to work within the security industry. To determine if you do, consider asking yourself these questions.
  • Can you remain calm in a tense situation? Security guards often need to react quickly when an emergency occurs or a security threat arises. Whether you need to deal with a suspect who poses a threat to people or property you are guarding or respond to an emergency and offer first aid and assistance, you need to be able to think on your feet.
  • Are you detail oriented? Security guards need to focus on the little details which can be indicators of a security risk. You must be able to stay completely focused on guarding the people or property you have been hired to protect.
  • Are you a good communicator? Security guards may be able to effectively resolve tense situations if they had strong communication skills.
